Hanshi Mike McLaughlin has been training in martial arts for more than 30 years. He holds a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and 4th Level Black Sash in Arnis. He is also a Sifu in the Ip Man lineage of Wing Chun. Mr. McLaughlin has also trained in Jeet Kune Do, Aiki Jujutsu, Judo, Muay Thai and Goju-Ryu. In addition, he is a certified Law Enforcement Tactics Instructor and a certified American Black Ops Combat Arts Instructor.
Mr. McLaughlin has had the privilege of training with several world-renowned martial artists, including Dan Inosanto and Richard Bustillo, both original students of the legendary Bruce Lee. Mr. McLaughlin is also a certified instructor under Grandmaster Bustillo.
Mr. McLaughlin has been teaching for ACTIVSTARS since 1997 and has taught thousands of students in the Phoenix metro area. More than one hundred of his students have earned black belts. He has also assisted with training instructors from Phoenix, Houston, and Dallas. In 2002, Mr. McLaughlin led a group of students, parents and instructors to China to visit the Shaolin Temple and train the monks from the temple. Mr. McLaughlin is also proud to be the coach of the 8-time champion demo team “Focused Intensity.”
In addition to teaching martial arts, Mr. McLaughlin promotes fitness among his students. He is a certified personal trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He is also a certified MMA Conditioning Specialist, Youth Exercise Specialist, Behavior Change Specialist and Weight Loss Specialist with NASM. Mr. McLaughlin is also a certified JrFit Youth Fitness Specialist with the American Academy of Health and Fitness. Mr. McLaughlin also holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and has written extensively about martial arts for newspapers and various websites.
Mr. McLaughlin was inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018. He was appointed as the Regional Director in the Southwest for the Hall of Fame in 2017. He has also taught at the Hall of Fame International Training Camp.
In 2019, Mr. McLaughlin was inducted into the Masters Hall of Fame in Costa Mesa, California.
