Sensei Carl's favorite superhero is Spiderman. Much like the friendly neighborhood web slinger, he embraces agility and quick thinking in his teaching style. He enjoys the humor and wit of The Simpsons. Sensei Carl's sense of adventure extends beyond the dojo. Learning to surf in the waves of Hawaii is just one example of his fearless spirit and determination to conquer new challenges.

Martial Art's Journey:
I began my journey at the age of 6 in Kenpo Karate as a family package with my mom and dad and only lasted two years. Kids right. I then found myself at age 12 enrolling in an old style of martial arts from Okinawa Ryukyu Kempo Shorei-Ryu and Kobudo weaponry as passed down through Robert Trias Sensei to David Adams Sensei. Earning my black belt at age 18.
From there I began college, and started taking ITF Taekwondo, JKA Shotokan, and sprinkled in some Shorin-Ryu as well and earning a red belt (brown belt equivalent in other styles) in Taekwondo and a black belt in Shotokan. As luck would have it, while my kids were then enrolled into the ActivStars Program, an opportunity came up that I would be able to test for 2nd Degree Black Belt in both Shotokan and Shorin-Ryu, and I took it earning that Nidan rank in both styles. At this point I was asked by my kids’ sensei if I would like to teach, and well, here I am.
Life’s Journey:
I am a native of the KC Metro area, raised in Oak Grove and currently reside in Independence. I have a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Central Missouri with 25 years in the print and design industry. Plus, I have skills in photography, videography, marketing and social media marketing which makes me this creative guru in so many ways. Plus, I am on my quest to have visited all 50 states with only 9 left!
I have two kids that are making their way through the ActivStars program and are actually excited for me to be an instructor and help them along their journey. No it’s true, they actually said that.
