Instructor Background
Sensei Carl’s martial arts journey began at the age of 6 with Kenpo Karate—a family tradition that set the foundation for his future. At 12, he transitioned to Ryukyu Kempo Shorei-Ryu and Kobudo weaponry, an Okinawan martial art style, under the instruction of Robert Trias Sensei and David Adams Sensei. Sensei Carl earned his black belt in Shorei-Ryu by age 18, a milestone that marked his commitment to martial arts. He then expanded his repertoire in college, diving into ITF Taekwondo, JKA Shotokan, and Shorin-Ryu. His dedication earned him a red belt in Taekwondo and black belts in Shotokan and Shorin-Ryu, along with a 2nd Degree Black Belt in both Shotokan and Shorin-Ryu through his involvement with ActivStars.
Sensei Carl’s teaching journey began as a result of his children’s own enrollment in ActivStars. Their sensei invited him to become an instructor, and he gladly accepted. Today, his goal is to inspire the same excitement and dedication in his students that he feels toward the martial arts.
Life Outside the Dojo
Sensei Carl is a KC Metro native, raised in Oak Grove and currently residing in Independence. A creative powerhouse, he holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Central Missouri and has spent over 25 years in the print and design industry. His skills extend to photography, videography, marketing, and social media—making him a versatile instructor with a knack for visual storytelling. He’s also on a mission to visit all 50 states, with only nine left to explore!
Carl’s family is fully immersed in the ActivStars journey. Both of his children are students in the program, and they’re proud to have him as an instructor, often looking to him for guidance and support.

Sensei Carl’s favorite superhero is none other than Spider-Man. Like the web-slinging hero, he incorporates agility, quick reflexes, and lightheartedness into his classes, encouraging students to think on their feet. His love for humor extends to The Simpsons, a show he admires for its wit. Sensei Carl is also an adventurer—he’s even tried surfing in Hawaii, embracing new challenges with fearlessness and determination.
