Instructor Background
Sensei Erica began her martial arts journey in 2012 with ActivStars at the St. Joseph, MO location, under the guidance of Sensei Alex Thompson. In 2014, she continued her training with Sensei Graham Leavell, who has remained her mentor throughout her journey. After years of dedication and hard work, she earned her 1st-degree black belt in American Kenpo in 2019. Her accomplishment not only marked a milestone in her martial arts career but also opened the door to a new role as an instructor with ActivStars later that year.
As an instructor, Sensei Erica is committed to teaching her students much more than physical techniques. She aims to instill respect, discipline, and self-confidence, which were the core lessons she gained from her own training. Her objective is to ensure students develop a strong understanding of stranger awareness and self-defense while having an incredible time in the dojo.

Sensei Erica brings a lively, humorous spirit to her teaching. Known affectionately as “Monkey,” Erica’s fun-loving side shines through her creative antics. Once, she crafted a makeshift hot air balloon out of a box and a big bag, only to have it blow back into her face, leaving everyone in fits of laughter. Outside the dojo, she enjoys the quirky tunes of Bug Hunter, has a healthy aversion to snakes, and fuels her enthusiasm with Philly Cheesesteaks and Fruity Pebbles.
