Meet Sensei Mark Steuver - Karate Classes in Casa Grande, Florence, Yuma, and Mesa Education Center in AZ

Sensei Mark Steuver, also known by his Buddhist name Shi Yanjian, is a remarkable figure in the martial arts community. Fully ordained in 2013, he became the first North American-born disciple to achieve this honor in the Shaolin Temple's 1500-year history, as a 34th generation Shaolin Warrior Monk under the venerable Abbott Shi YongXin.


Mark's martial arts journey began in 1979, and he boasts over 37 years of training, mastering the discipline and principles that define martial arts. His dedication to his craft has led him to excel in competitions, earning multiple medals in Mainland China, police Olympic medals, the Arizona state kickboxing title, and an impressive 13 Grand Championships in open tournament competitions across the United States.


Mark's connection to the Shaolin Temple is profound. He first visited in 2001 and has returned 13 times, spending over four years living, training, and competing in China. His deep understanding of martial arts history and culture complements his fluency in Mandarin Chinese, which he achieved through studies in both Chinese and American colleges.


In addition to his martial arts expertise, Sensei Steuver is committed to public service. He has worked as a Police Officer for the Eloy Police Department and served as a Crisis Prevention Instructor in the special education department of the Casa Grande Elementary School District. Since 1999, he has been instructing martial arts at Central Arizona College.


With the highest belt ranking obtainable, Sensei Steuver has been with ActivStars Athletics since 1999, where he has received numerous accolades, including "Instructor Extraordinaire" and "Above and Beyond" plaques. His classes are inclusive, welcoming adults, children, athletes, and individuals with special needs.
