One of the most exciting aspects of martial arts is the belt system which represent a student’s growth, discipline, and dedication. At ActivStars Athletics, the karate belt colors progression is carefully designed to teach students safety awareness, self-defense, and martial arts fundamentals while reinforcing values like respect, discipline, and perseverance. For parents and students curious about how the journey unfolds, here’s what you need to know about advancing through the ranks.


Beginner Karate Classes (White – Green Belts)

📍 45-minute classes, once a week

Focus: Safety awareness, self-defense fundamentals, and basic martial arts techniques


Beginner students start with the White Belt, symbolizing a fresh start and the foundation of their training. Progression in these early levels is designed to help students build confidence while learning basic blocks, strikes, and kicks.


White Belt – The Starting Point

New students will:

  • Learn basic martial arts techniques: blocks, strikes, and kicks

  • Understand dojo etiquette and traditions

  • Practice break-free and run self-defense techniques

  • Participate in Anti-Abduction SafeShield lessons

  • Earn weekly ribbons based on karate home challenges

  • Make new friendships and build confidence


Yellow Belt – Continuing Growth

At this level, students refine their fundamentals while reinforcing:

  • Basic blocks, strikes, and kicks

  • Self-defense skills

  • Anti-Abduction SafeShield lessons

  • Weekly ribbons for karate home challenges


Green Belt – Building a Strong Foundation

Students at this stage complete their understanding of beginner martial arts principles and start new challenges:

  • A strong grasp of basic blocks, strikes, and kicks

  • Fundamental self-defense techniques

  • Advanced knowledge of dojo etiquette and traditions

  • Introduction to kata/forms (structured martial arts movements)

  • Basic sparring skills


Intermediate Karate Classes (Blue – Purple Belts)

📍 60-minute classes, once a week

Focus: Formal martial arts techniques, kata, sparring, and self-defense development


As students enter intermediate ranks, they begin refining their skills with more complex techniques, self-defense applications, and structured sparring practice. Anti-bullying lessons are also emphasized.


Blue Belt – The Next Level

Students begin:

  • Intermediate blocks, strikes, and kicks

  • Intermediate self-defense techniques with preemptive and finishing techniques

  • One-step sparring techniques

  • Basic kata/forms

  • Safe weapon forms

  • Earning merit badges

They also continue working on basic sparring skills.


Purple Belt – Strengthening Skills

At this level, students refine their intermediate skills and take on new challenges:

  • Intermediate self-defense techniques and one-steps

  • More complex kata/forms and weapon techniques

  • Earning merit badges

  • Introduction to intermediate sparring


Advanced Karate Classes (Orange – Black Belts)

📍 90-minute classes, once a week

Focus: Mastery of advanced techniques, leadership skills, and competition readiness


Students in advanced classes develop a high level of skill, responsibility, and leadership. They work on advanced forms, one-steps, and self-defense techniques, while also assisting younger students as senpai mentors.


Orange Belt – The Path to Leadership Begins

Students start:

  • Advanced blocks, strikes, and kicks

  • Leadership skills & teamwork development

  • Joint locks and takedown techniques

  • Advanced kata/forms and one-step techniques

They continue working on intermediate weapon training.


Red & Brown Belts – Refinement & Mastery

At these ranks, students refine their expertise, focusing on:

  • Mastering advanced martial arts techniques

  • Developing strong leadership and teamwork skills

  • Continuing weapon training and earning advanced merit badges

  • Assisting in ring judging at tournaments


Black Belt – The Ultimate Achievement

Earning a Black Belt is about more than skill—it’s about responsibility, leadership, and commitment to lifelong learning. Black Belts at ActivStars Athletics:

✅ Master 30 blocks, strikes, and kicks

✅ Demonstrate 44 advanced self-defense techniques

✅ 10 Style-specific katas/forms

✅ Learn to judge at tournaments

✅ Continue weapons training

✅ Become trusted senpai leaders

✅ Build lifelong friendships
